BVCC Second X1 are champions!

Huge congratulations to BVCC 2nd X1 who clinched the Aire-Wharfe division 3 title in dramatic fashion on Saturday. The fixtures man had a sense of occasion as first played second with Ben Rhydding visiting us in a ”winner takes all” match. With Indian summer weather and an enthusiastic vocal support BVCC batted first posting a disappointing 138 all out. Ben Rhydding’s reply ebbed and flowed, with a steady start followed by a tumble of wickets, a mid order stand followed by a further tumble of wickets with BVCC then looking good with Ben Rhydding’s last pair at the wicket with some 30 odd runs still required. The 10th wicket partnership however edged Ben Rhydding closer to their target of 139 as nerves jangled on the field and off it. With the score on 131, captain Adam Marsden bowled the title winning ball  as veteran Peter Clarke held on to a superb catch. This was a well earned title and promotion with a talented bunch of cricketers playing for each other and with everybody chipping in through the season with some outstanding performances. Well done to captain Adam Marsden and able deputies Peter Clarke and Tony Jones. A special mention to Gareth Johnson for his consistent runs and to young 13 year old budding all rounder Darwin King who added his chirpy enthusiasm during his debut season.

Despite a mediocre early part of the season, and too many unexpected weekly changes to squad availability, our first X1 ended it in fine form with improving performances from everyone ensuring a respectable finish and better expectations for next season. Well done to Andrew Clarke in his debut season as captain. Our Aussie Luke Pickford returns home this week and thanks to him for entertainment both on and off the field! Good luck for the future Luke and keep in touch.

Thanks to all players, off field helpers too numerous to mention, and supporters for everything you’ve done through the season. Winter well!
